How to sign up for Medicare in Indiana
Signing up for Medicare in Indiana follows the same federal rules as everywhere else. What changes from place to place is which plans you can choose afterward, because Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by county. Here’s how to sign up, step by step, and where we can help.
Step 1: Know your enrollment window
- Initial Enrollment Period: the seven months around your 65th birthday (the three months before, your birthday month and the three months after). Sign up in the three months before your birthday month and your coverage can start on the first day of your birthday month.
- Still working? If you have health coverage through your own or your spouse’s current job, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty. When that job or coverage ends, you get an eight-month Special Enrollment Period to sign up. Check with your employer’s benefits team before you decide, because the rules depend on the size of the employer.
- Missed your window? The General Enrollment Period runs January 1 to March 31 each year, and a late penalty may apply.
Step 2: Sign up for Part A and Part B
If you already get Social Security retirement benefits, you’re usually enrolled in Parts A and B automatically, and your Medicare card arrives in the mail a few months before you turn 65.
If you don’t get Social Security yet, you sign up through Social Security: online at SSA.gov, by phone or at a local Social Security office in Indiana. You don’t have to start your Social Security retirement benefits to sign up for Medicare.
Step 3: Choose how you’ll fill the gaps
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn’t cover everything, and it has no yearly limit on what you pay. Most people in Indiana add one of these:
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plus a Part D drug plan. Works alongside Original Medicare and lets you see any doctor who accepts Medicare.
- Medicare Advantage. One private plan that replaces how you use Parts A and B, usually with drug coverage and extras built in. Plans use networks and vary by county.
Your first six months with Part B is your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. It’s the easiest time to get a Medicare Supplement, because insurance companies can’t turn you down or charge more for health conditions.
Step 4: Avoid late penalties
Signing up late for Part B or going without drug coverage for too long after you’re eligible for Part D can add a penalty to your premium for as long as you have Medicare. Getting the timing right the first time avoids both.
